Computer hardware and software represent computer technology that defines and represents changes in systems of operation within different professions. Nursing is a healthcare profession that has great significance to society, and computer technology is slowly becoming a standard for its practice. One of essential elements of computer technology used for nursing is electronic healthcare records which is a system of communication used by nurses to ensure that there is a smooth flow of information used with the aim of enhancing the nursing practice. Computer technology provides quick and easy access to information about patients and other aspects of healthcare institutions. They use computers similar to those found at home, but with software unique and specific to the needs of healthcare organization this means that such computers are based on the use of software technology designed to support their work (Dinsdale, 2004).
Computer technology health nurses easily create effective treatment plans due to easy and quick access to information about patients. Information explained above include X-ray and laboratory results, patient history information and recommendations from other physicians. With such information, nurses have the ability to provide the best possible healthcare. Computer technology is also associated with different types of databases and libraries for which they can get access to resources associated with different aspects such as drugs and diagnosis information (Kuei-Feng, Shu, Ming-Sheng, & Chia-Ling, 2004).
