Task groups are found in a macro social environment, and their role is to meet the needs of a community, family, groups, organizations, or an individual. They apply the dynamic group principles to develop ideas and plans, solve problems, and meet various goals. Task groups are classified into eight categories formed according to the role played. For example, there those that cater to the community, organizational, and clients need. For instance, the groups that meet the needs of a client include staff development groups, treatment conferences, and teams.
A team is composed of individuals who work interdependently and collaboratively to achieve a specific goal. The members of the team must be committed and ready to work together on behalf of the clients. Treatment conferences are made up of teams who often meet to coordinate, monitor, and establish plans on behalf of the clients. They may involve internal or external staff and professionals depending on whether the agencies match the service provision. On the other hand, staff development groups improve the skills of the worker to help them offer quality services to the clients (Kirst-Ashman, 2012).

Unlike team conferences, staff development groups are composed of the internal staff and professionals of an agency.
The groups that meet the requirements of an organization include committees, administrative groups, and board of directors. The primary goal of these groups is to come up with ideas and plans, formulate policies, and objectives for the agency, and investigate, act, and report things that may hinder the functioning of the organization. On the other hand, groups that serve the needs of the society are classified into social action groups and delegate councils.
A delegate council is composed of representatives from different organizations or units within the same agency who can be appointed or elected by their respective constituencies. Social action groups improve the welfare of an individual through inspiration, offering mutual support, and cooperating among the members of the action groups. On the other hand, some groups focus on catering to the needs of a person; they include therapy groups, educational groups, growth groups, support groups, and socialization groups (Kirst-Ashman, 2012). They help individuals improve their interpersonal skills, solve personal problems, and fit in the society.
All the task groups are similar in that they are driven by a specific goal which should either be of benefit to the society, an individual, or the organization. The primary difference between teams and other task groups is that members of a team depend on each other and understand that fact, while other task groups are made up of individuals who work independently. Additionally, in a team, members focus on achieving the goals of the team, while other task groups emphasize on achieving personal goals that are within the context of the group. The main difference between treatment groups and treatment conferences is that the latter focuses on obtaining a change in the external environment of a group while the former give counseling to the members of a team whose goal is to achieve a positive change internally. Additionally, support groups also differ from therapy groups in that the former encourages the members to help and support each other, whereas in a therapy group it is only the leader who assists the members on how they can solve their problems (Vogel & Kirst-Ashman, 2014).
Each of these groups is designed to fit in an agency setting. For instance, a task group may be formed to help develop strategies that will prevent crime in a community through the creation of the neighborhood watch programs. A team can contain several social workers who are working together to come up with a plan to help a family facing domestic violence. An example of a treatment conference is a scenario where occupational therapists and social workers have planned to have a meet up to discuss the best treatment to be given to their patient. An example of a committee is a group of representatives in a nursing home, whose assignment is to investigate the food quality (Vogel & Kirst-Ashman, 2014). On the other hand, an example of a delegate council is a situation where representatives from different organizations who have come together to investigate and solve a social problem such as the issue of housing.
