33. Briefly explain the difference between data, information, and knowledge. Explain why information is a critical organizational asset, and explain the security professional’s role in protecting this critical asset.
Data is defined as unprocessed or raw facts or instructions that have no interpretation or analysis. On the other hand, information is data that has been interpreted and analyzed so that it has meaning to the user while knowledge is a combination of information and experience as well as insight. Information is an essential asset in any organization since it gives companies a better chance of achieving its goals and objectives. Information is a valuable commodity in the modern business world since it offers organizations the ability to learn about consumer behavior and market competition (Robson, 10). Additionally, information gives firms a competitive advantage over their competition. The world has over 400 million computers connected to the internet and the need for cybersecurity has never been greater. Security professionals are tasked with the responsibility of protecting information in an organization by safeguarding networks, infrastructure, and computer systems from internal and external threats.
