Diagnosis
One may use a combination of tests to diagnose Crohn’s disease, including:
Fecal occult blood test: It involves testing for hidden occult or blood in a stool sample
Tests for anemia or infection: You may carry out blood tests to check if there is anemia — “a condition in which there aren’t enough red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your tissues or to check for signs of infection” (Bessi et al., 2018). Various procedures may be used in carrying out the tests, including computerized tomography (CT), colonoscopy and magnetic resonance imaging among others. It’s vital to note that a single test can’t diagnose the Crohn’s disease, but rather a series of tests are carried out to eliminate all the other disorders with similar symptoms.
Treatment
Crohn’s disease does not have a cure hence the treatment is done to lessen the symptoms and improve the quality of life for the patients. The treatments entail medication, surgery and lifestyle changes. Some of the medications used include anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, immunomodulators, and biologic therapies (Cheifetz, 2014). Change of lifestyle like stopping smoking, dietary changes and exercise are also methods used to manage Crohn’s disease. Other people also use natural treatments to manage medical conditions including Crohn’s disease despite the method not being approved. The natural methods include the use of Aloe Vera plant, fish oil, Prebiotics, and probiotics.
