What is socialized health insurance (SHI)?
Socialized health insurance entails a system of meeting health costs where employers and employees are required by the government to contribute a set amount of money towards the health insurance fund (Niles, 2016). The government also contributes some money towards the health insurance fund. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) passed in 2010 in the United States of America was intended to ensure universal health coverage (Shi & Singh, 2014). Despite the U.S. government devoting a significant proportion of its budget to the health care sector, the sector still performed poorly in comparison to the health care sectors of other developed nations. Consequently, the U.S. government not only required persons residing in the U.S. to have health insurance coverage, but also required employers with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance coverage to the employees (Niles, 2016).
Unemployed persons are catered for through Medicare and Medicaid programs. While Medicare provides health insurance coverage to poor persons above the age of 65, Medicaid provides health insurance coverage to persons whose household income is below a certain level (Niles, 2016). A socialized health insurance system leads to a pool of funds from the public and private sectors which leads to a reduction in the overall health care costs (Shi & Singh, 2014). The U.S.

government encourages employers to provide health insurance coverage to employees by providing tax credits to employers who participate in the program. Unemployed persons are compelled to obtain health insurance coverage through not only the government funding Medicaid and Medicare programs, but also fining persons established not to have a health insurance coverage. Universal health insurance coverage thanks to socialized health insurance leads to an overall reduction in health costs by encouraging patients to seek medical help in the early stages of a disease rather than when they are terminally ill (Shi & Singh, 2014).
What are the health concerns of children?
The proportion of children covered under Medicaid was 38.2% in 2011 while the proportion of children covered under private insurance was 53.7% in 2011 (Shi & Singh, 2014). The vaccination of children is affected by various factors, such as race, poverty, and where the children reside. From a race perspective, white children exhibit greater vaccination rates for diseases, such as polio and measles compared to children of color. From poverty and area of residence perspectives, children sired in families whose income is below the Federal Poverty Line (FPL) or who reside deep inside city areas, exhibit lower vaccination rates in comparison to other children (Shi & Singh, 2014).
Children receive medical help through several problems exhibiting varied eligibility, selection, and funding criteria which could hinder all children from receiving medical help. To address the gap between the fore mentioned three sectors, public and private sectors should collaborate to ensure that all children enjoy quality health care.
