Passing the Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act (PPACA) into legislation in 2010 has significantly impacted on the nurses’ practice in offering healthcare services. Generating evidence and engaging in research is one of the provisions that the legislation has presented to nurses. Of course, research in nursing assists in generating scientific evidence that can be used to generate solutions in healthcare and hence, improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, the requirements of the legislation are accompanied by challenges and the nurses have to come up with solutions to these challenges. Effective solutions can only be obtained from scientific facts through research.
Another provision that the legislation presents to nurses is redesigning of nursing education. The nursing profession is significantly affected by the provision in that all the incoming nurses are required to be competent and equipped with skills that enable them to handle the diverse society. In sum, the PPACA has impacted the nursing profession in that nurses have to be researchers. The legislation has also caused the need to have improved nursing education. These provisions for nurses aim to ensure that the challenges associated with nursing practice under the act are handled appropriately.
