Electronic Medical Records
Technologies have taken the better part of operations in almost all sectors of health organizations, hospitals, and care units. The technology that has been widely used at my facility is the use of electronic medical record systems. Electronic medical records(EMRs) are the equivalent of paper and charts records kept at a clinicians office as defined in CITATION McD06 l 1033 (McDonald, 2006).EMR comprises of general information of the patient, treatment history, diagnosis and other information that is collected by individual medical practitioners during their day to day operations. There are many observational changes since the EMR system was implemented at my place of work that affects both the patient care and the operations.
EMR have improved both the patient care and outcome in some ways. First, the system has made it possible for multiple healthcare providers to access the patients’ medical records at the same time. Easy access to the patient records ensures that the diagnosis and treatment therapies are conducted more effectively and timely without the need to wait for the paper record to circulate from one specialist to the other. Second, EMR systems have enabled the involvement of the patient and their family in the healthcare process CITATION McD06 l 1033 (McDonald, 2006). There are instances where the patients receive their clinical summaries of any visit within three days after their visit.

The clinical summaries comprise of the medicine prescribed, medical advice, therapies and the next follow up appointment day. The sharing of information has generally improved the patients care.
To better the patient care and outcome I would recommend the creation of interphase that will allow receiving feedback from the users. The patients as well as anyone that entering the data should be given a platform to review the easiness and usefulness of the system. I would also recommend a regular update of the MER system to accommodate the changes that are continually occurring in the nursing operations.
