1 In the summer of 1973, “King Zahir Shah was overthrown in a bloodless coup by his cousin Daoud Khan “( Khaled, Hosseini 14). Jalil had visited Nana and her daughter Mariam. In the month of January this year, Yasir Arafat was re-elected as head of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. During the same month, the former president of the United States of America, Lyndon B. Johnson died at his Texas ranch aged 64 years. In the following month, a Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114, gunned down over the Sinai Desert kills, more than 100 people.
2 In April 1978, “a prominent communist Mir Akbar Khyber’s murder leads to demonstrations in Kabul. Ten days later, Colonel Abdul Qader announces the overthrow of President Daoud Khan by communist supporters. The president and his family are murdered “( Khaled, Hosseini 55, 57). Mariam, forced to eat pebbles by her husband Rasheed, breaks her teeth. In addition, Fariba gives birth to a baby girl and names her Laila. In this year, Fatah terrorists led by Dalal Mughrabi attack and kill 35 people in Tel Aviv in the month of March. In January, Junius Richards Jayewardene becomes the first president of Sri Lanka with executive powers.
3 In April 1988, “the Soviet Union and Afghanistan sign a treaty in Geneva effectively ending their war. In January 1989, the last of the Soviets leave “( Khaled, Hosseini 85, 86). Fariba, Laila, and Tariq watch the departure of the last Soviet tanks.

They later watch a Soviet film at Union Park cinema. In this year, the 15th Winter Olympics open in Canada. Elsewhere, Zia Ul-Haq, the president of Pakistan disbands parliament and fires the government.
4 In April 1992, “Najibullah steps down and seeks refuge at the UN compound near Darulaman Palace, south of Kabul. The Mujahedeen renames Afghanistan to the Islamic state of Afghanistan and forms an Islamic jihad council in Peshawar. The council is led by Sighatullah Mojadidi.Rabbani is elected president of the leadership council” (Khaled ,Hosseini 88). Disagreements arise within the Mujahedeen over the election and civil war erupts in Kabul. Fariba holds a party to celebrate Najibullah’s surrender. During the party, she confronts Laila about her relationship with Tariq. Elsewhere, Tariq is involved in a fight but escapes unscathed. Two months later, Laila’s friend Giti dies over rocket bombing. Panama sentences former president Manuel Noriega 40 years over drugs and racketeering charges. Elsewhere, Bill Clinton wins the presidential elections.
5 In September 2001, “Ahmad Shah Massoud is assassinated”. While cleaning a room at a hotel, Laila and Tariq watch on the screen as two planes crash into a building. The crown prince of Nepal massacres his entire family and dies four days later. Later in the year, two American airlines flights crash into The World Trade Center killing over 2, 900 people.
