Wikis
Wikis refer to websites that generate information from the internet. The wikis rely on syntaxes that create connections between various pages. People use simple steps to make the pages, and that makes them very popular. The creators can configure the number of individuals that can access and alter the contents (WikiEducator 1). However, in most cases, the sites have open access to all the internet users, and therefore anybody can edit the contents.
The wikis have various advantages that have made them popular. For example, they undergo constant updates which present the latest information on an issue. Individuals from different parts of the world conduct the editing, and hence people from China can provide original insights on a matter that occurs in the region (WikiEducator 5). The websites have various tools that allow different people to work on the same document and that produces a more elaborate material.
On the other hand, the wikis have various disadvantages. For instance, the open access allows individuals to update unreliable information to the pages. Secondly, the software used to make the sites expose them to spams and other forms of intrusion. Thirdly, some of the websites contain many users that disorganize the information (WikiEducator 6). Therefore, researchers may not have the opportunity to gain a detailed view of concepts.
Wikipedia acts as the largest wiki on the internet. Many researchers consider the site as unreliable due to the nature of the systems and the number of editors.

The development of the pages usually does not undergo steps that validate the sources and the credibility. Therefore, in some instances, the members update false and unverified information that can mislead the public (WikiEducator 2). Such characteristics make the sites unreliable in research.
