The demand for healthcare services has pushed for professionalism on a global scale. The article by Pravikoff, Tanner, and Pierce of (2005) identifies evidence-based practice as an area that the US health sector should focus on moving into the next healthcare frontier. In exploring the readiness of the US health practitioners, primarily nurses, the article highlights research as a neglected tool of practice that would help in decision making. The study examines Registered Nurses (RN) currently practicing to help understand the scope of applied evidence-based practice within the US health sector. The article further deliberates on the attitudes of practitioners in relation to research focusing on which sites or sources of information they refer to when seeking information. The article as purposed by the authors had the objectives of building on the knowledge that already exists through further research as a means of integrating skills with the better understanding of health situations.
The article looks to incorporate evidence from studies into practice through an evaluation process of obtaining outcomes to evaluate existing problems. The authors acknowledge the importance of the skills obtained during class coursework but propose evidence-based practice as a complementing feature of improved professionalism. Noted from the study remains the urge by RNs to engage in research but barriers including time to apply such knowledge from research have been a hindrance.
