Why it is Important to Keep Promises you make
A promise is a form of commitment. It involves at least two parties. While many people tend to make false promises, it is essential that we only make promises that we can keep. It is like asking another person to trust you. Whenever we keep the promises we make to others, more often than not, we gain their trust. Therefore, this paper discusses the importance of keeping the promises we make to others and to ourselves and the crucial role they play in defining the nature of interpersonal relationships we have with others.
Failure to keep a promise made to someone shows lack of value and respect to them. It means that we choose to put other things ahead of our commitment. Breaking promises even the small ones make people unable to count on us (Gielan, 2018). It starts ruining the relationships we have with friends since they know we do not always do what we promise to do. It breaks the trust they have for which may be disastrous especially when dealing with customers.
Failing to keep promises doesn’t only affect the people we make the commitments to, it also affects the person committing himself. If you don’t hold your promise, you are telling yourself that you don’t put a value on your own words. One may think that letting other people down, saying things they don’t mean, or failing to do something promised is okay. Breaking promises is like disrespecting oneself, and it can cause damage to your self-esteem, self-image, and your life in general (Marks, 2017).

Therefore, it is important we keep the promises we make to others.
In conclusion, the promises we make to other people mean a lot to them. Breaking promises breaks trust and also harms the person breaking the promise. It is always good to look at whether you can meet the promises before you make them. Therefore, it is essential to keep our promises to have healthy relationships with others.
