Abstract
Every year, many criminals are imprisoned either on a long-term or short-term basis. The term prison is used to refer to a correctional facility where the wrongdoers are confined, rehabilitated as well as controlled in a strictly supervised environment. Ideally, a prison should serve to mend the unruly behavior of a criminal. On the other side, it is critical to recognize the fact that being sentenced to prison comes with a lot of adverse effects not only on the individuals but also the family members, community and the country at large. As a result, therefore, this has attracted the United Nations to establish various norms as well as standards that support the need for carrying out prison reforms. Thus, through this paper, the researcher looks forward to discussing the effects of imprisonment and the need to carry out various changes in the prisons. Most inmates do not access the positive results of their detention.

There have been various debates revolving around the need for prison reforms. Many human rights movements have been championing for changes in the prison sector. However, for this agenda to succeed the developing countries have to put in more financial as well as human resources. Notably, imprisonment has various detrimental impacts not only on the individual, community but also the economy of a country. This essay endeavors to focus on the effect of confinement as well as the need to implement various reforms in prisons.

Imprisonment derives an individual of their right to liberty. Thus, prison reforms will ensure that this right is strictly observed through granting social reintegration to the prisoners. Secondly, imprisonment leads to financial losses and poverty (Iulia Lazar, n.d.). When a breadwinner is imprisoned, the dependents have to adjust to the loss of income thus exposing them to poverty due to financial losses. Besides, other funds will be directed towards other expenses such as hiring a lawyer, and the transport visits to the prison. Imprisonment directly contributes to escalating the poverty levels in the family and community at large.
Most of the prisons have minimal access to public health services. Consequently, this explains why most prisoners are diagnosed with various health issues. This condition could be attributed to factors such as poor nutrition, overcrowding, poor sanitation, communicable diseases as well as psychiatric disorders (Iulia Lazar, n.d.). This negatively affects the inmate.
Imprisonment weakens social cohesion as it disrupts the long-term relationships among friends and family members.
In a nutshell, this discussion points out the need to carry out prison reforms. Imprisonment eventually turns out to be costly. This is putting into consideration the various costs such as the indirect costs incurred due to healthcare, economic and the upkeep of the prisoner.
