He implies to the commonly held sociocultural comprehension of the mandate to one’s nation. Having seen loved ones die, most of the gathered people recognized that the battlegrounds could not have been sanctified more than by the army that had fought there. Many people in the audience could also concur that it was the citizenry’s’ role to continue with the blueprint that had been set by the fallen soldiers. Therefore, with the aid of deductive reasoning, Abraham Lincoln stresses on the importance of continuing to fight for equality and freedom (Bitzer 6). As a result, the nobility of fighting and dying for the values that one believes in is premised. This leads to an enthymeme, whereby Lincoln seeks for the people to understand that if freedom and liberty are outstanding traits that all those soldiers had perished for, then they are characteristics that are worth to continue fighting for. Via this conclusion, Lincoln’s main goal was to encourage the audience, especially people of the North, to withstand and tolerate the fight for liberty and equality. With the aid of this speech, Lincoln wanted to preserve these qualities’ value and in the end his Union (Bitzer 12).
In conclusion, Abraham Lincoln’s speech was quite effective in delivering the message to the masses. His use of the logos literary device was able to capture the logic of the masses.
