Case Scenario Analysis
According to my nursing experience, I believe that everyone in life especially my patients would love to regain back to their healthy life. In the case of a terminal disease that they know they cannot recover from and are ready to die, they usually believe they need to leave a legacy of remembrance after they are gone. In this case, I am tasked to wonder about the aspects of life that are significant. Interacting with patients has helped me to learn a lot about life. For instance, in this case, Mr. Newcomb is one of my close friends and patients, and I would grant him his wish of wanting to bid a significant person goodbye. However, its vital that I will have to explore his legacy with his wife if it happens that she discovers of his secret of a mistress.
Solving this dilemma requires that I adopt ethical sensitivity while understanding the possible consequences of my decisions. In my capacity as a nurse, I am obliged to decline Mr. Newcomb’s request because it is an action that is against the code of ethics of nurses’ practice. For this reason, it would be unethical and a violation of the nurses ’professional conduct.
Researchers in the nursing profession highlight that the nurse’s role is to act in a way that will promote the well-being of their patients as noted in the principle of beneficence. The care that nurses offer to patients is for improving the health of their patients; however, in Mr.

Newcomb’s case, I am restricted to offering my support in delivering the chemotherapy treatment. Registered nurses have the responsibility of caring for patients by supporting them through their treatment and symptom management (Tarzian et al., 2015). Through my services for the Mr. Newcomb, I will be doing my duty of managing the side effects resulting from the chemotherapy treatment; I will be helping him in reducing his discomfort while prolonging his survival period by taking care of him.
In any case, I allow Mr. Newcomb to see his mistress while lying to her wife; I would be practicing non-maleficence with the aim of avoiding a scenario of harming the patient. On the other hand, Mr. Newcomb has the right to shift from aggressive chemotherapy treatment since the oncologist has advised for the halting of the treatment since nothing will change. Whenever a treatment does not help the patient to improve his health, the medication should be halted because continued administration of this treatment will result in harmful side effects (Winland-Brown et al., 2015). According to the nursing profession, this act will is malicious. Practicing non-maleficence is my duty as a nurse because I will be required to help the patient to transition successfully from the aggressive treatment of chemotherapy to primary care.
The execution of justice is evident in the action of giving the patient a choice and availing the resources that would be used in the administering the chemotherapy treatment. In the ANA code of conduct, the nurses are instructed to offer patients that have a sound mind the chance to make choices regarding their treatment. Patients and their family members should be allowed to make decisions regarding the type of care that they need after seeking advice from the doctors (Masters, 2015). In this case, Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb decided of changing the treatment to hospice care after they considered their beliefs and personal values. In this way, the nursing practice demands that the patients should have a share of the decision-making process regarding their state (Dracup et al., 2014). For this reason, I respect the decision of Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb to cease the treatment and accept the expected death of the patient. The fact that Mr. Newcomb is of sound mind, it would be acceptable to have him and his wife make such a decision because he has the autonomy manifested in the independence from control and influences from other people.
I believe that the interaction between individuals in any field within the world is significant and it offers people opportunities to grow and learn. In my nursing profession, I usually reflect on my daily experiences and identify areas in which I need to improve to exploit my full potential. In my case with Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb, my decision to decline his request and to limit myself from interfering with the personal relationship of the two was the best decision that a nurse would have taken to retain honesty in my profession. In this way, I preserved my integrity.
Taking care of human beings and being conscious of the responsibilities that we harbor is significant. Any changes in any part of a person’s life would affect the entire body, mind, and soul. Florence Nightingale pioneered the role of ethical observance in the nursing and commitment to the patients. In connection to Mr. Newcomb, the patient needed enough appropriate rest meals and emotional care from his loved ones. Therefore, his wife was allowed to visit and stay with him. I would advise for a spiritual leader to help him in prayer during his last days if I was to offer my advice.
