Robin Kelly, the representative for Illinois’s second congressional district, sponsored a bill that will see the federal government heighten its efforts of preventing maternal mortality. She introduced the bill in May 2018 hence it is at the first stages of the legislative process. As at now, the bill has to undergo scrutiny and in-depth discussion by the health committee before forwarding to the House or the Senate. If the bill is passed, it will be revolutionary with regards to maternal care and help in the reduction of mortality rates. It will substantially impact professional nursing as the federal government will increase its support to hospitals. Apart from that, the federal government will offer healthcare professionals with best practices aimed at reducing and preventing maternal mortality. In this regard, more emphasis will be laid to collecting and using data on such deaths to inform on best care practices that need to be taken to address the menace.
Evidently, healthcare facilities are expected to request for grants that will be issued by the Secretary. Such funds would be used to adopt and implement maternal safety through a collaborative approach. It will also facilitate extensive research in areas such as obstetric hemorrhage and maternal mental health. Such facilitation will play a crucial role in preventing and reducing the high death rates of women due to birth-related complications.

Personally, if the bill is passed, it will influence my nursing practice positively. The additional research in the field will be crucial to improving my care delivery. The bill proposes the federal government should facilitate research and further studies for health care providers. Therefore, such a program would provide me an opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills towards reducing maternal mortality.
