Racism as a Hindrance to Reconstruction in America
Racism is one of the topics discussed broadly in class which affects the Reconstruction in America. America has struggled for many years to deal with the issue of racism through the efforts of human rights activists; unfortunately, racism is still rampant in the US.
Article one: “Me and My White Teachers.”

The article on the New York Times talks about the importance of diversity among teachers and the best way to respond to racists remarks. The article features the story of a black student and how her teacher helped her manage racial discrimination from fellow students and perform better in school. According to the article, teachers play a significant role in fighting against racism and some in increasing racial biases. Most black students’ reports to benefit significantly from a black teacher as it is also in white students who have an added advantage by having a white teacher around. The article shows that the reason behind such racial behavior is unconscious bias, role model effect and culturally sensitive (Eligon, John & Rachel n.p). The school curriculum in America fails to address the history of the black people which is an issue as students are challenged to think critically about their identity and community. The best way to reduce racism in America especially in schools is by bringing the topic of racial diversity in the curriculum whereby students get to understand the history of all races.

Article two: “Racial reconciliation will help us live up to our nation’s values.”

An article on the USA TODAY shows how racial reconciliation will benefit the nation by helping America live in Nation’s values. The article reveals that racism is still rampant in America as people of color get killed by white supremacists featuring the state of Charlottesville. The more Americans ignore the issue of racism, the more it grows creating hate (Landrieu n.p). Charlottesville is one of the regions with a high rate of racism witnessed from several attacks on black athletes, police-community protests and separation of families based on color and nationality. America has never dealt with the root of racism; instead, people are divided by anger, hate, and fear. People are using the notion of race to isolate themselves and the nation at large. Thus, American need to confront the truth about race by understanding the root as it is the only way to deal with the challenge of racism.
Reconstruction in America will be successful if the nation deals with the challenge of racism and bring the country together.
