Benjamin Rush, Thoughts upon Female Education (1787).
What role does Rush foresee for women in the new American republic?
Rush Benjamin was an advocate of slavery abolition, a leading reformer, and a public education proponent. Rush elaborated why the republican government revolution enhanced extension of the women education opportunities. Benjamin Rush thought that the American colonies’ women deserved a better admission to training and schooling during the 18th century (Foner 120). “There are several circumstances in the situation, employment, and duties of women, in America, which require a peculiar mode of education,” Rush said (Foner 120).
According to Foner (120), the American Revolution had modified the cultural, socio-political and economic dimensions. The rights of women had changed due to the new form of government, thus it became significant to educate the Women in America. The new independence demanded a well knowledge equipped mind that could benefit the economy. He believed their role in politics was to teach their young ones in “the principles of liberty” to shape them into righteous citizens (Foner 120).
2. What benefits does he anticipate for society and the family form from extending educational opportunities to women?
Benjamin Rush stated in his speech that it was of importance to educate the women since it could improve the family form and the entire American society. He further commented that the young women education in the United States should be managed upon different principles from the British society (Foner 121).

The women education, for instance, would ameliorate their communication skills, therefore, using them in conversing with other people and educating their kids. In addition, education would act as a necessity for the liberty of women and improve their degree of qualification (Foner 121). “Some knowledge of figures and book-keeping is absolutely necessary to qualify a young lady for the duties which await her in this country” Rush stated (Foner 121).
Education would as well empower the women to guard the property of their husbands (Foner 121). Vocal music should be adhered to in educating young women; it would enable them to restore the domestic life cares. Rush believed dancing was an essential education branch for American women, and this would promote health and render the body motions and figures agreeable and easy (Foner 122). Therefore, education would teach women on discharging their duties for better reputation and success (Foner 122).
