Terrorism is a global problem as well as a local one. In the last two decades, more and more individuals motivated by a wide range of ideological beliefs and other personal agenda such as anger and revenge have engaged in horrendous acts of mass violence targeting civilians in communities all over America. The rate of these attacks has increased significantly in the last ten years. After the event of 9/11, the United States government formed the Department of Homeland Security to deal with such terrorist activities within the country. Before Homeland, community policing was the primary way of identifying criminals and crime at the community level. However, following the attacks by homegrown jihadists in Orlando and San Bernardino, the relationship between community policing and homeland has been under a lot of scrutinies. Community policing is a vital tool that should be applied to homeland security to facilitate the fight against homegrown terrorism.
The safety and stability of communities in the United States require trust and cooperation between the residents and law enforcement agencies. Recent events have highlighted situations that occur when the association breaks downs. Community policing continues to be an essential aspect curbing crime all over the United States. This policing focuses on building ties and working in conjunction with community members serve. Law enforcement works together with residents to pinpoint and solve problems.

Homeland Security main objective is to identify local threats, and community policing provides a better avenue locating threats at the ground level.
Majority of American believe community policing strengthens the society`s resilience to violent extremism. Community policing is engaging thus there is open communication between the people and law enforcement. The trust between the parties helps institute honest and open dialogue on sensitive matters such as terrorism and hate crimes. Moreover, these programs help educate communities about crime and law enforcement, which creates awareness about violent extremism and helps prevent such incidences. It also promotes mobilization of people in the community as well as guides them on how to respond to current problems. Homeland deals more with gathering information from surveillance and investigations, while the community is policing deals with creating a meaningful and lasting relationship with the citizens.
