The Importance of Being Earnest
Of the original written version of Oscars Wilde’s writing, looks similar to the 2002 film versions. The directors took a little license with some details such as the ages of the players. The versions are an outrageously funny portrayal of an already hilarious script. As in all written to movie versions, some of the detail is lost to due to the time constraints of filming. In the 2002 film version, cut some of the most boring timelines because of the visual acuity that only works with film. These next paragraphs will compare and contrast some of these details.

The man known as Algernon has invented a friend in the country so he can escape the rigors of city life. Both films and Wilde’s script identify these two men’s subterfuge. The inherent difference between the films speaks to the advancement of film technology. The older film sets up more like live theater and closely mimics Wilde’s work. The film version did some modification of the dialog to be more modern. Both films use the same timeline. This is due to the almost similar period costumes and the settings and modern modification of dialog in the 2002 film. Earnest states “he was found in a handbag.” In the original version, Wilde writes that “he was found by the late Mr. Thomas Cardew, a gentleman of a very charitable and kindly disposition, found me and gave me the name or Worthing, because he had a first class ticket to Worthing in his pocket,” (Wilde, 17). This is typical of a modern version of cutting down of the older style dialog.

All versions of the story show Wilde’s masterful presentation of how these two men play a role in Victorian Society with irascible behavior for hiding from bill collectors and a pack of lies, fraught with misrepresentations. All versions were very humorous and entertaining for readers and movie watchers. Most movies watchers go for the entertainment value, and the 2002 version was infinitely more hilarious than the original version.

It presents as quite a small lie that grows exponentially. The men kill off Earnest as a way to save face from all the controversy. Dishonesty has a way of coming back to haunt someone who regularly embellishes a story. Most movies watchers go for the entertainment value, and the 2002 version was infinitely more hilarious than the other version. It must be the more modern film and editing technology, which make the newest movie vastly more entertaining.
