Nguyen and Hirota’s article Trump’s Next Target: Legal Immigrants highlights the possibility of deportation of immigrants who rely on governmental aid and support for survival. The move backed by the Trump administration could see some children separated from their parents and a denial of the green card to immigrant residents who get public assistance from governmental funds. This paper will analyze the manner in which the media has portrayed this development by presenting an analysis of Nguyen and Hirota’s piece.
Over the past decade, the media has come under criticism for not being objective in their reports. I would like to affirm this claim with a proper analysis of the article. First, the media in the reviewed paper inclines itself towards the rejection of the proposed law. An excerpt from the article states that “but Americans must insist that Congress intervene to block this proposal” (Nguyen and Hirota n.p). Objective reporting should demand that media reports highlight the arguments from both sides without airing their take and allow people to read and decide which course to take.
The report supports immigration into the US under the premise that immigrants strengthen the American society. However, the phrasing of these support seems racial. The authors have portrayed the immigrants as not part of America but rather people who just come to help in the labor force and strengthen the community. The authors do not refer to immigrants as fellow citizens but people or intruders in their society.

This portrayal is evident in the except “A robust body of research shows that legal immigrants strengthen our society. Immigrants have a higher rate of labor force participation than native-born Americans.” The article identifies that immigrants help reduce the medical cost for native Americans which proves that the immigrants are a means towards societal goals.
