Imperialists Rise to Globalism
Imperialism can be termed as a strategy used to reign over people politically or economically in a manner that deprives them of their freedom to make crucial decisions. The USA has been known to be one of the most influential countries in the whole world. The state has a far-reaching effect on other nations when it comes to culture, technology, fashion, and business trends. It is evident that America earned such significant influence on other governments through American Imperialism (Olson-Raymer). This imperialism was slightly different from the colonialism of early republics. Contrary to European colonial that sought an empire for glory or gold the US sought a market for industries products. They aimed at acquiring access to overseas market instead of politically controlling markets.
As per earlier philosophies of merchants, nations eyed colonies that would be marketed for their finished goods as well as a source of raw materials. However, American Imperialists wanted establishments that aided in keeping foreign markets open and accessible. For instance, the Philippines was of great significance to America since despite its large population the island allowed the US to have a naval base through which it could protect its business interests in Japan and China. Imperialists such as McKinley were boldly against all attempts of forgoing the Philippines (Reiman). He had solid reasons to support his stand as he believed by renouncing the nation it would have been taken over by Spain and such a deed would have depicted the US as a cowardice country.

Of course during this era of American imperialism the nation was getting much respect from other countries, and as a result, former superpowers would take advantage of any weakness they sensed. Therefore, America had to remain firm in its decision otherwise it would lose its superiority.
Another reason as to why giving away the Philippines was unwise was because it would have been a bad business move. The island was a direct connection for American’s products to Asia, hence giving it away would be illogical considering the US aimed at creating a world of free trade. Robert Kagan who is a historian and author of Dangerous Nation praises the United States for being imperialistic (Kagan 13). According to the author, it is through imperialism that America was able to expand their culture and religion which makes the nation a conducive place for diverse persons from all over the world. The rich culture in the US has helped shape humanity and given a voice for the less privileged or oppressed. Therefore, imperialists helped in promoting interaction of people who together formed a great nation.
Also, the places that the US took over benefited in education and medicine. Most of the colonies that were being colonized in the 1898-1901’s were not advanced and lacked the right education system. Conditions in such countries were improved with the invasion of Americans. One may say that even without the assistance of Americans such nations would have still become civilized. Although this might be true, it would have taken them a lot of time to reach there. American imperialism has granted the world with some degree of defensive support that protects people if there is an international conflict. The US does this by taking advantage of the respect other countries have upon it and initiate peaceful measures to solve the dispute between parties. It, therefore, helps in maintaining peace among nations.
