Effects of Discrimination in Education
Poverty has been a major concern across the world. Most people live below the average level. This has significantly affected the quality of education. The level of poverty varies depending on gender, race, region, disabilities, and sexual orientation. Unfortunately, those who are disadvantaged continue to face more disadvantages. Hence, the poor continue to get poorer while the rich become more prosperous. Unequal distribution of resources has also undermined development amongst people. What makes the matter even worse is the fact that the government has continuously used methods that do not reflect the actual situation. According to Gorski (2018), the government has only focused on the ability to afford food while it has ignored other factors such as child care, housing, and transportation.
Gorski illustrates several factors that have contributed to poverty level gaps and how they have affected the quality of education. He states that the child poverty level is high in the United States with approximately 22% of the children experiencing poverty. Further, if the total number of children living in families where affording basic needs the a problem was to be accounted for, the number could rise to 43%. He argues that most people have been adamant in analyzing the causal factors of poverty blaming the people affected. However, it is evident that even those people with a full-time job and even part-time job are unable to hit the threshold out of poverty level.

This is due to insufficient jobs that can pay a living-wage salary. Gender has favoured men more than women regarding employment. Despite having equal credentials, women only receive 80% of what men earn (Gorski, 2018). Women are more likely to live in poverty due to raising their children as single mothers. The race has significantly contributed to the unequal distribution of poverty with the dual-heritage people earning meager wages compared to pure American citizens. The youths have also faced discrimination due to their sexual orientation. Most have been rejected by their parents hence, subjecting them to poverty. Those living with disabilities are discriminated against employment that they get and are also paid less than those without disabilities. Rural and suburb areas also have heightened levels of poverty and the schools in these areas are poorly equipped and underfunded. The wealthy have consistently controlled funds which have led to the abject poverty of the majority population who are poor. Hence, low quality of education.
Du Bois also suggest that racism in the United States is real. He supports the idea of the African-Americans having separate schools from the Americans. He argues that most students with mixed parentage who have attended mixed schools have only ended up being bullied, despised, and mocked. Further, the prejudice in America makes it hard for the African Americans to receive proper and quality education in mixed schools, hence, the need to have separate schools where they will be taught by teachers of the same race. Du Bois believes that such will be useful since the African American teachers will be able to give sympathetic education (Bois, 1935). Also, the teachers understand the origin of their students and hence will teach as per the requirements. However, the idea has been derailed by fellow African Americans who lack faith in their race. They feel that the quality of education that will be offered will be of low quality. Also, some feel that this may lead to poorer treatment by the Americans. Hence, he suggests the need for the Afro Americans to start trusting their race to give equal or even better quality services. Moreover, he urges them to fight for equal funding, improved infrastructure, and proper training and payment of teachers in Afro American schools just as those of American schools (Bois, 1935). In so doing, the African Americans will receive a better education and learn in an environment where they are happy and treated well.
The two papers are a special reflection of the challenges that the minority groups face. It is clear that most people are not poor by will or because they are lazy, rather, the situation and the conditions have just not favoured them. One does not choose the gender or the race which they are born. However, such circumstances have disadvantaged them. One has to work extra hard to prove themselves worthy of the opportunities. It is unfortunate that the wealthy people who are at an advantage since they can afford all the necessities and even luxuries have not shown any effort to minimize the poverty levels. Instead, they have continued to control almost all the resources leaving the poor with little to benefit from. Gorski condemns those who wag fingers accusing the poor of being lazy and not getting themselves a job. I agree with him that it will be impossible to fight poverty if the existing racial, gender, sexism, and regional discrimination does not end (Gorski, 2018). It is also not practical to pay low wages and expect that the parents will be in a position to take their children to better schools. Hence, it is the role of the government to ensure that there are enough living-wage jobs and that all schools are well equipped to provide quality education to all children. However, a question remains on whether all the people living in poverty are working their way out of it. Also, why is a country that is highly industrialized not able to pay a good wage to its citizens and equip its schools equally? Or does the government also discriminate?
Bi Duos helps me to reflect on the real situation that the Afro Americans face in mixed schools. However, I feel that he is biased since he believes that it is the African Americans who need to accept that the Americans are prejudiced and accept to move to separate schools rather than the Americans changing the way they treat those with dual heritage. He also uses the term Negro which may be offensive to some people. However, reading through the paper, I see the need of having separate schools. It is impossible to ignore the fact that prejudice is real in the United States. Also, it is impossible to learn when one feels threatened. I now feel that separate schools will provide favourable conditions. I support the author that it is the time that the Afro Americans believed in themselves and prove that they are in no way inferior to the Americans. If provided with the same conditions and training, the can do very well. Being in a separate or mixed school does not matter. The colour of the skin may be different, but the reasoning may be the same or even better. They have to stop hindering the process of having separate schools since it is the most effective way to ensure that they get educated. All that the Afro Americans need is to respect themselves so that they can be respected. However, I feel that this might be only a temporary solution. Will having separate schools bring an end to prejudice? After schools, the students need to get a job to earn a living. Will there be different jobs for the African Americans or how will they deal with racial discrimination at this level?
In conclusion, economic, social, and racial discrimination have hindered the quality of education offered in institutions. It is important to ensure there is an equal distribution of resources for the benefit of everyone.
