What is the most frequently used media type for young children?
An increase in smartphone device production has seen more young people have access to the media. With more youth having access to cell phone, computers, TV, and radio among others, media content usage among the young has become too prevalent with an averaged time of seven hours in a day. A predicted 66% of young people in the US own cell phones and 76% with M3 players and iPods. However, the amount of time spent varies across the different types of media available. Television happens to be the most frequently used media compared to others amongst the youth (Rideout 14).
What are advantages and disadvantages of media in the home?
Availability of media at home offers both advantages and disadvantages to the youth. First access to the media narrows effects of the digital divide. More so, it provides recreational activities and entertainment to the young people. The computer and internet play an essential role in facilitating research studies for school homework. However, high media users get low grades at school and experience less contentedness compared to fair media users (Rideout 23).
How can families wisely use the media in the home to facilitate children’s development?
The responsibility for regulating media usage at home to facilitate the development of children falls with the parents. Leaving the children exposed to media for longer times as discussed above can lead to more damage than good to the youth.

To wisely use media at home, the parents should limit the number of media devices they buy. Such undertakings can minimize the possibilities of the young having computers, phones, and video game player in their bedrooms. More so, to ensure that the children spend most of their time in doing constructive work at home, such media should be turned on during specific times such as during meals, family time, or during news time (Rideout 35).
