African American women face discrimination in American society in their entire life, not just during pregnancy. The unequal treatment for people of color subjects them to chronic stress and ultimately affects their pregnancy outcomes.

Racial disparities in birth outcomes cannot be reduced to class alone because the environment in which a person is born is believed to affect their health whether one is successful or not. In fact, infant mortality is high among African American women regardless of their socioeconomic status (Unnaturalcausesdoc, 2008).

Dr. Jones means that the cumulative impact of racism contributes to poor health consequences. The repeated experiences of racism are dangerous to the body since they affect childbearing health.

Wealthier and educated mothers tend to have better birth outcomes. This is because educated women understand that a healthy lifestyle is essential for a good pregnancy (Unnaturalcausesdoc, 2008). Besides, wealthier mothers can afford to eat a healthy diet and do not have much stress compared to the poorer mothers.

This is because women experience stress throughout their entire life course; this determines their birth comes. There is a need to address risk factors that affect women’s health across their life course, but not just during pregnancy.

The experiences outside the body even before pregnancy can impact pregnancy outcomes because they cause stress which, in turn, makes one susceptible to preterm delivery.

The life-course perspective states that all exposures from early life all through to adulthood cannot be reversed by prenatal care. Thus, the experiences of women of color in the United States contribute to poor pregnancy outcomes.
