Epithelial cells are types of cells that line on the surface of the body. These cells are different from other cells in several ways. Whereas the nerve cells are not flagellated and ciliated, the epithelial cells have the two properties which assist in fluid movement in the reproductive tract. Mesenchymal cells arise from the mesoderm and are involved in connective tissue and structural support while the epithelial cells are derived from the ectoderm (Medzhitov & Janeway, 2017). Endothelial cells, on the other hand, lie deep inside the body while the epithelial is located on the surface of the body.
The arrangement of epithelial cells is special and plays a role in protection. The cells are packed tightly together to provide a protective barrier for the body. Epithelial cells also have gap junctions as part of their arrangement. The gap junctions are a door-like connection that is responsible for the exchange of nutrients. These cells also produce secretions such as mucus that acts as lubricants which protect the body against damage (Medzhitov & Janeway, 2017). Other secretions include sweat for temperature regulation and enzymes that also protect the body against damage.
The three plasma proteins systems essential for inflammatory responses include the complement system, clotting system, and Kinin system. The complement system can enhance phagocytic cells and antibodies in the clearing of microbes and damaged cells.

It also contributes in attacking of the cell membrane of the pathogen (Putnam, 2012). The clotting system which is initiated by inflammation can impair the fibrinolytic system and reduces the natural anticoagulant mechanisms activities. The Kinin system on the other hand through the Kinins is perceived as inflammatory mediators that are involved in increasing vascular permeability and blood vessels dilation (Putnam, 2012).
