NAACP – Interest Group
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), is an American organization for interracial people created with the purpose of the abolishing segregation, unlawful killing, slavery, and bias in settlement, education, employment, voting, and transportation (Kellogg 139). The interest group’s work targets national issues affecting people of color in America utilizing administrative activities to safeguard civil rights lawmaking, community schooling plans to rally backing, and straight activities to attain equality.
Termed as the longest standing civil rights association group in America, the NAACP arose from the Niagara Movement, led by William E. B. DuBois (Locke 205). The NAACP was formulated in the summer of 1908 and founded on May 30, 1909, by W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida Bell Wells-Barnett, and Mary White Ovington drawing significant inspiration from the 1908 Springfield, Illinois Race Riot to become the initial African American-led organization (Locke 207). The group experienced slow growth during the first decade of its creation but picked up the pace from 1918 to 1920 onwards.
The NAACP has a predominantly African American membership. The group continually holds a multicultural management practice devoted to establishing a united public (Locke 105). The group comprised of 43 994 members with 165 branches in 38 states in America as well as in two other countries by 1918 (Sullivan 198). In America, the NAACP had over half a million associates in 1 700 plans and 450 college and youth plans by 2009 from the NAACP 2015 report (Moore n.

p.).
From the NAACP 2015 report, the NAACP is a 29 million dollars per year non-profit multi-organization, NAACP main source of income stems from grants which are not deductible. NAACP has recorded 61 corporate contributors, 20 foundations, and seven organizations. According to the 2015 journal, it had negative 500 thousand dollars as net assets.
The NAACP in its recruitment process targeted African American communities. In 2016, the NAACP’s Civic Engagement programme comprised of; church canvassing, door-to-door and site-based neighborhood canvassing, 2016 state voter guides, website national voter registration application, toll-free hotline number, phone banking call centers, public service announcements, social media outreach, Technological tools, and apps to streamline the program (Kellogg 310).
In conclusion, interest groups serve as a link between citizens of a specific nature to the government to assist in dispersion of political power, to change the electoral system and to achieve interests of the represented group. The NAACP is a primary example of services offered by interest groups and the results they provide. NAACP has been in the forefront in vying for equal civil rights, and it is responsible for this better new America.
