Farzad Mostashari’s Aledade
The Affordable Care Act is a federal law that was put into place in 2010 by President Barack Obama. Also known as Obamacare, the law provides for a fundamental reform of the United States healthcare and health insurance. It was designed with the sole purpose of allowing U.S. citizens to have affordable and easily accessible health care. While this act seemed significant in reforming the entire United States health care system, the system is still in a great mess. President Trump, along with many other Americans, believes this is a faulty system that will not work for the country. He stated that Obama’s health care law is collapsing with most self-employed Americans paying out of their pockets for healthcare because not all health care facilities accept Obamacare. However, one company called Aledade established with the Affordable Care Act as an incentive for start-up on changing how healthcare is provided has proved significant in reducing the cost of health care while at the same time improving how patients are treated (Manjoo, 1). Due to technological advancements in healthcare such as artificial intelligence and wearable health gadgets, the American healthcare system has become a great market for health-related reforms with Alidade being an ideal example.

Doctor and technologist Farzad Mostashari has designed the technology company Aledade with the sole purpose to help reduce health care spending as well as help Americans to take advantage of the Affordable Care Act. This start-up incentive was founded in 2014 and by August last year, it had raised close to $75 million from investors as funds to be used in reducing the cost of health care for American citizens. Dr. Mostashari says that “The whole idea is to align incentives between society, doctors and patients,”. He adds that Aledade has helped reduce hospital readmissions and decrease visits to specialists in many of its markets. ”We’re reducing unnecessary and harmful utilization and improving quality of care.” (Manjoo, 1) The Aledade technology helps prevent hospital re-admissions and lowers specialist visits by keeping a close track of patient data, a checklist, and preventative care. The system, for instance, will alert a patient’s physician’s office by flagging appointments that may be due. Mind you, the plan seems to be working since Farzad states that he has visited two healthcare facilities that have adopted the incentive and the method seems to have reduced wasteful spending significantly.
All in all, while the Aledade technology has been shown to cut healthcare spending, it has not generated any revenue so far. This technology, therefore, cannot be relied upon fully. Doctors and patients will still need to establish good relationships as this technology do not work if the patients do not fully utilize it. Though Dr. Mostashari has created a great program and software, his Aledade incentive is still a work in progress but hopefully, with time it will begin to realize revenue and meet Medicare’s standard.
