Communication Pattern of the Japanese Culture
With different culture comes different communication patterns, this article’s aim is to prove this by use of the Japanese cultures of communication pattern in comparison to other foreign cultures, Americans in particular. The Japanese tend to avoid communicating with people of non-Japanese culture. Studies have shown that the Japanese people feel uncomfortable speaking to westerners of even similar social status as themselves. The Japanese people feel this way because they not only feel that the foreigner style of communication highly different from there’s, but also that they are similar to the high-born Japanese families. The difference gives them a disliking character towards communicating to westerners and tend to avoid it
OBSERVATIONS EXPECTED BY AMERICANS IN JAPAN
Japan is an island country isolated from its neighbouring countries having the closest continent coast being 180km. The country having being locked out from the rest of the world restricted the Japanese from exchange culture with other people. The period of isolation between the years 1640-1854, the Japanese formed rules and codes of communication uninfluenced by other cultures bringing about its unique pattern. The first encounter with non-Japanese speakers was during the end of the 19th century. They have been forced to learn how to speak foreign languages that they are not comfortable with given that there choice of language (Japanese) is unique and not shared with other cultures.
Wait! introduction and conclusion paper is just an example!
It’s noted by several scholars that Japanese people not only are apprehensive about communicating with foreigners but also amongst themselves. Thus communicating with foreigners is not new but an extension of an already current norm. A cross-culture study was done named the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA) where seven nations sampled student represent them, and Japan was the rated the highest in apprehension levels.
A foreigner will be surprised at the tendency of a Japanese to choose to speak English despite the foreigner being better in Japanese than the Japanese is in English. An Australian linguistic, Jiri Neustupny, noted that Japanese will prefer to answer a question asked by a foreigner using reasonably fluent Japanese, in broken English (Neustupny 87). Various studies done by scholars have made some interesting observations where the level of apprehension of the Japanese seems to be lower when speaking English than their native tongue even to each other.
OBSERVATIONS EXPECTED BY JAPANESE IN AMERICA
The Japanese critic, Eto Jun in the year 1977 suggested that Japanese people are the one of the most homogeneous people in the world. Their homogeneous character has brought a perception of them that one’s personal ideas are similar to that of others unlike that of the Westerners who believe that each and everyone has their unique way of thought. Given a Japanese person is brought into America, they will experience difficulty in expressing themselves even with the knowledge of English language. The perception of the Japanese of having owned similar ideas has influenced their communication to involve more facial expressions and gestures expecting their feelings to be interpreted whereas in America feelings are expressed more by words instead.
CONCLUSION
Communication patterns are seen to be influenced by the cultural background of individuals as shown by the Japanese culture in the article above. Japanese unique rules and code of communication and cultural perceptions have made them avoidable, anxious, and uncertain to communicating with foreigners. The Japanese culture has influenced their communication habit to the extent of also being apprehensive amongst themselves proving the extent at how important culture is to communication patterns.
