The deliberations are common despite the fact that big cities have their own merits including small towns (Wuthnow 23). The merits influence the movement of people depending on what their needs are in the short and long term. The key reasons why people think that living in the big cities is better than living in small towns include
Numeracy of opportunities- Big cities have characterized with many opportunities in diverse sectors of the economy as compared to small towns (Lora-Wainwright 107). The sectors include industrial, manufacturing, fashion and design, entertainment, transport, construction and building, banking, aviation among others. The sectors create several job opportunities for the public. People always live in high hopes of getting good jobs in the big cities as it is said that they hold the greener pastures as compared to small towns that have limited opportunities. The fact that there is the high population in the cities encourages entrepreneurship hence any serious person will always find something to do as compared to small towns. Hence, people move to big cities in search of job opportunities.
Availability of things/life incentives- Life in big cities is attractive and enjoyable since everything ranging from food of every type and quality, social amenities, recreation centers, health facilitates and schools are easily available as compared to small towns (Mishra 1). There is an opportunity for acquiring alternative items as valuables are always in plenty.
Good and quality health services- Big cities remain the hub of quality and effective medication centers globally. They have a wide variety of doctors and medical specialists who can assist upon request real time as compared to small towns (Lora-Wainwright 108). This reduces the chances of someone dying or suffering because there is no specialist to attend to him/her. Similarly, medical institutions are many and patients can choose appropriately. Very many health clubs, fitness support groups and sports teams in the big cities contribute to the fitness and healthy nature of the individuals. The benefit is real as small towns lack adequate health centers, medical staff, fitness centers and sports groups that promote individuals physical fitness.
Good lifestyle and availability of social amenities including recreational centers- The lifestyle in big cities is enjoyable and trendy by all standards. The cities have various social amenities and recreational centers where people can have fun, refresh and unwind. The cities also have more people that one can socialize to thereby increasing one’s network with people with potential job connections and friends of high caliber as compared to small towns.
On the other hand, life in small towns is considered better than that in big cities due to some reasons. The first reason is that there is no rush hour in the small towns (Mishra 1). Those who live in small towns have no worries of rush hour problem that normally affect people in big cities. Under such circumstances, people in the small towns do not waste many hours on traffic jams but instead employ that time in executing productive activities. The influx of people in big cities makes it hard for movement to be effective. One has to leave for various destinations early hence causes time wastage.
You can be yourself- Life is small towns present less pressure that enables people to be themselves and not to pretend to make ends meet (Mishra 1). There are huge challenges in big cities such as economic deficiency that make most people to wear masks on their personality and character. The practice affects their attitude and in turn general performance contrary to life in small towns that presents limited pressure hence enable one to live his or her life.
Values- People living in small towns have good values and virtues that are necessary for life. They are less complicated as compared to their town counterparts, simple-hearted and lead effortless life (Mishra 1). Immense warmth and good gestures that cannot be associated to those who live in big cities characterize their approach to issues. Contrastingly, the effortless life may be detrimental to their progress as it hinders innovation and creativity that is imperative for generating new things that in turn increase financial stability.
Security- Leaving in small towns brings a sense of social security given that there is always no cause of panic or worries against unlawful happenings that are common in big cities. Moving around in big cities safely requires an intervention of security officers and a supernatural being in most cases. You cannot be sure that you will get back to the house well as you left.
Minimal cost of living- There is fewer costs of living attached to the lifestyle in small towns (Lora-Wainwright 171). This is because they do not spend on fair daily, get cheaper food items and they do not need to buy various items all the time since some are available locally on the farms such as vegetables. This is contrary to life in big cities where possessing anything involves parting with money.
Lesser noise and low pollution levels- Noise in small towns and pollution is minimal given that there are limited vehicles on the move, few industries that emit toxic substances in the atmosphere or water are present and human congestion is not an issue as compared to big cities where people breath contaminated air. The air and dirty water expose them to various diseases including chronic illnesses such as cancer.
Based on the discussion, it is difficult to draw a conclusion on the best or suitable area to stay. However, living in big cities have some advantages regarding exposure and other things as noted as compared to living in small towns. The most important thing is for one to move or live there when he/she can afford the lifestyle. Do not move to big cities and suffer in the pretext of its incentives that you cannot enjoy due to various limitations.
Conclusion
It is prudent to conclude that there is no clear answer to the assertion that life in small towns is better than that in big cities despite the slight advantages that life in big cities present. This is because success or failure is common in both environments. A spot check in both environments indicates that a good number of people are doing well in the cities while others languish in poverty and vice versa in small towns. Therefore, this assertion should be left for an individual to digest based on his capability. This is because in an industrious economy or any other setting, decisions to live in either of the environment are driven by certain facts. The factors include work, business, education, leisure among other factors. For instance, people live in big cities because of work posting and the nature of work requires them to be there, some live because of business activities while others school in the regions. This also applies to small towns where people live because of work, education purposes or execution of agricultural activities.
