about our colony
This original colony was chartered by King James I and was funded by a London organization known as the Virginia Company, which was made up of several shareholders who anticipated to get huge returns from this project. The venture was hoping to find gold, silver, jewels and a quicker passage to the Pacific Ocean and the Orient. Their voyage began in December 1606 from England. 105 passengers boarded The Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery to the new world off the Virginia Coast named after the Queen of England. Captain Christopher Newport led this expedition. The settlers arrived off the coast of Virginia in May 1607. All but one passenger survived the voyage to the new world.
There were several reasons why England wanted to create a new colony. The colony was loyal to England and supported English goals by hoping to expand the English empire overseas.

They were also in search of a quicker route to the Orient and proselytized the Virginia Indians to the Anglican belief.
The colony was organized and formed a government that worked for the new settlers. The colony decided to be governed by a council that was made up of seven members. One of the seven members would serve as the president of the council.
In the Jamestown area, a huge number of the Indians were part of the Powhatan Empire. The bond between the Powhatan and the settlers was a peculiar one, as there were a lot of different sentiments. To start with, the Chief was welcoming to the settles as he gave them food and treated them with hospitality, and allowing the colony to hold off starvation. The Native Americans exchanged food for metal goods and implements. John Smith traversed and proposed to trade with native Indians; he aimed was to acquire cheap labor and treat the local Indians like slaves. Following the unsuccessful effort at bargaining with the Indians, he opted to forcefully take what he wanted and this created hostility among the tribe.
A few problems that the early settlers faced were the relations with the Powhatan Indians were strained. The climate was unfamiliar, as well as lack of provisions and salty water supply. A long famine may have led to disease and bereavement.  Also, a number of the first colonists were the elite Englishmen, and the colony did not have enough manual workers and experienced farmers to work the land.

The exact location of Jamestown, Virginia is 76.7863° W longitude, 37.2267° N latitude. It was formed up the James River on a peninsula fifty miles starting at the opening of the Chesapeake Bay. The river was named after the King of England by the colonists. The peninsula was positioned in a place where the colonists were able to see oncoming ships making the site secure from a watercourse assail. In the northwest corner, a piece of land connected the peninsula to the mainland. Woodlands on the mainland supplied natural amenities for the colony. Regrettably, for the colonists, the region neighboring the peninsula was contaminated swampland, and the water was salty from a combination of seawater in the river. Swampland and marshes made life hard.

With frigid winters and scorching tropical summers, the weather of early Jamestown as compared to what the colonists were used to in England was quite different. They were not equipped to endure the winters in the insufficient shelters they constructed. Also, they did not comprehend the danger of disease from the insects that reproduced in the humid and hot environments or the growing season of that region.
This colony did not originally have any slaves or indentured servants. The first slaves came years later once a successful export was created at Jamestown. The first slaves arrived in 1619.
ECONOMY
Since the founding of the initial permanent English settlement in 1607 in Jamestown agriculture has been a central economy in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Through the Virginia colony in 1614, John Rolfe pioneered tobacco in England. It is believed that the seeds for the tobacco crops came from Trinidad. Tobacco became a cash crop for the colony throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and almost helped the colony become profitable. Colonists also cultivated wheat and corn to be used by their folks. Other produces were grown, but most of them were for personal use.
