Listening is an important element of communication because it allows comprehension of the speaker’s message to not only improves knowledge about a subject but also as a way of ensuring an active uptake of information. An active listening approach can also be used as the basis for asking for clarification or reply as the listener gets to understand what is being spoken. This essay discusses ways that can be used to demonstrate active listening to a speaker. The first way of showing active listening is by maintaining eye contact with the speaker as well as ensuring other non-verbal cues such as being attentive (German et al., 2017). On the same note, the listener should show signs of being relaxed while avoiding negative body languages such as fidgeting that demonstrate a lack of interest and concentration.
The second action that can be used to demonstrating active listening is through giving feedback. The provision of feedback shows that the listener has a proper understanding and comprehension of the message of the speaker. One way of providing feedback is by asking questions to clarify points and statements made by the speaker. Thirdly, actively listening can be shown through appropriate responses such as by asserting opinions respectively while avoiding being disrespectful of the views of the speaker or other members of the audience.
