There is a vast preponderance of obesity in the Gulf countries like Kuwaiti, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Several nutrition-related non-communicable diseases can be linked to obesity such as hypertension and diabetes. There are also psychological and social effects of obesity.
The researchers Ng, Zaghloul, Ali, Harrison, and Popkin, conducted several studies on the preponderance of adipose, obesity and connected nutritional noncontagious illnesses in several Gulf countries including Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. They discovered that obesity is most frequent among females; whereas males have similar or greater overweight incidences [1]. The authors had challenges comparing child data due to variations in standards.
A different study conducted by Bader, Musaiger, Al-Roomi, and D’Souza on adipose and obesity identified some alarming facts. They identified both physical and psychosocial impact on the victims and caused a substantial economic burden on the entire community [2]. Obesity is the most significant cause of type 2 diabetes and has been known to increase the likelihood of diabetes during pregnancy. Also, obesity has been linked to certain types of cancer such as breast, kidney, pancreas, and thyroid [2].
The social impact of obesity in children, specifically among adolescence, has resulted in a long-term social impact on self-confidence, body perceptions and financial flexibility [3]. Also, victims of obesity face humiliation as a result of the extreme weight, stigma and other disparaging remarks, eating disorders like bulimia and binge eating, mood issues and depression.

In conclusion, obesity has received very minimal attention in several countries around the globe yet it influences the clinical and public health. Unfortunately, there are some societies in the Gulf countries that view obesity as a mark of high social standing and well-being. Bader et al. advocate for the creation of intervention programs that will help educate society including parents and health officers about the complications as a result of obesity.
