Introduction
A nurse manager is supposed to coordinate and direct a team of nurses in a health facility. Notably, these managers are supposed to singularly focus on the recruitment and retention of nurses alongside the day to day supervision of the nurses. Since they have a supervisory role, they are supposed to oversee everything related to the nursing unit which includes budgetary issues, patient care problems, personnel, and resources. A nurse manager is also supposed to represent the nurses and communicate their needs, concerns, and ideas to the hospital’s management. Several topics can help a nurse transition into a nurse manager role quickly and efficiently as outlined below.
Good Communication Skills: – As a nurse manager, communication is essential since it is the means of contact between the doctor and the patient’s family. Adequate communication is vital to the successful outcome of the patient (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). Also, good communication ensures that the ideas of the represented group of nurses are passed across to the hospital’s management.
Excellent Execution: – An idea can be brilliant, but without execution it becomes worthless. To become a successful manager, one needs not only to come up with ideas but also the ability to execute the ideas (Kodama & Fukahori, 2017).
Empowering others: – As a nurse manager, it’s important to understand the importance of empowering your subordinates and that the team cannot succeed unless everyone in it is empowered (Linnen & Rowley, 2014).

As such, after assuming the role of a manager, it is important to empower team members.
Encouraging Teamwork: – For the group members to succeed and for their voice to be heard, teamwork is of the essence. Teamwork in nursing is critical to achieving exceptional health care standards for the patients (Elrick, 2016). Through teamwork, one is guaranteed of positive results.
Leadership during a transition: – transition periods can be very challenging to nurse managers, but they should be skillful enough to ensure that they are productive even during such periods. Transitions are common in the practice, it is necessary to keep the process as seamless as possible (Aldisert, 2017).
Decision Making: – Decision making is an important aspect of nursing, and a nurse manager should be willing to make tough decisions whenever required to do so.
Mentorship: – As a nurse manager, one should act as mentors to other nurses and should act as a good role model.
Positivity: – As a nursing manager, one should ensure that they always maintain a positive attitude toward fellow nurses, doctors, and patients. This should be more of a necessity than choice (Roberts, 2013). This way there will be a healthy working environment.
Conclusion
As a new nurse manager, there are plenty of things that one should know to ensure that they adapt to the role without a hitch. Above are some of the management and leadership topics that one should familiarize themselves with.
