Islam and Virgin Mary
Mary is a highly important figure in Christian-Muslim dialogue. In the Qur’an and traditions of Islam and Christianity, Mary is viewed as the honor and veneration given to the person of Mary, the holy virgin and the mother of Prophet Messiah. Mary holds an important place within the realms of Christianity and Islam. Mary acts an important bridge between the two religions As a holy figure, Mary maintains and strengthens the harmony in the Christian-Muslim dialogue. Jesus, the son of Mary and Joseph, is revered in both Muslim and Christianity as a Prophet. Also, both Christianity and Islam accord the Virgin Mary a high degree of religious importance, and acknowledge her holiness (or purity) among women.
The Qur’an reveals the strong prophetic connection of Mary. Besides being mentioned over thirty times in the Quran, Mary is also presented as the only woman prophet in the Quran regardless of the fact that Muslim traditions still hold that no woman prophet ever existed. Mary played a major during the birth of Prophet John the Baptist by assisting Elizabeth throughout her delivery period. Moreover, the conception and birth of Jesus through the Holy Spirit is also synonymous with the Prophet Muhammad’s revelation of the Quran through the night of power.
Islam traditions share a subtle connection with Our Lady of Fatima. Muslims largely refer to Fatima as the Mother of believers. They also closely associate Mary with Fatima.

Mary is believed to have assisted Fatima’s mother, Khadija, during Fatima’s birth. Mary and Fatima are both recognized as holy women with a great significance beyond piety in Islam. The two figures as also have strong prophetic connections in the Qur’an. Mary is the mother of Prophet Messiah; Fatima is the mother of progenies of Prophet Muhammad
