Introduction and Problem Statement
The 9/11 terrorist attack has resulted in increased religious intolerance even in democratic societies where religious freedom and liberty has been existent for a long time. In the U.S, for instance, increased FBI surveillance of religious organizations and activities following the attacks has been condemned as this is seen as an invasion of personal freedom and civil liberties (Barkun, 2006). The existing religious intolerance also does little to resolve impending cases of terror as it makes it difficult for the religiously diverse groups to trust each other in the wake of the existing culture of secrecy. There is need to minimize terrorism acts while preserving civil liberties and this can be effectively achieved through promoting religious tolerance, adopting nature specific mitigation effort to minimizing terror and encouraging interfaith collaboration towards social healing.
Discussion
The 9/11 terrorist attack impacted hugely ion the mindsets of individuals as far as religious terrorism is concerned In America, intolerance, especially towards the Muslim community, has increased following the attacks despite claims that the country is founded on the principles of religious diversity.

Saiya and Scime (2014) argue that religious terrorism tends to arise in cases where religious liberty is curtailed. This is in stark contrast o the approaches made by governments including increased FBI surveillance of religious activities that tend to undermine personal and religious liberty in the hope of mitigating impending attacks. The culture of secrecy increases mistrust among religious groupings and this further hinders efforts and policy targeted towards mitigating future terrorist attacks. There is an increasing need to ethically resolve the standoff between religious terrorism and civil liberty.
Solutions to the Problem
One of the approaches that could be adopted is adopting a threat specific approach to mitigating acts of terror. According to Saiya (2015), nations could focus on measures that increase religious security in cases where these countries are struggling with some forms of faith-based terrorism. Another approach to addressing the problem of terrorism involves targeting the training camps of religious extremists which are usually located in foreign countries and launching air strikes on these bases. Such an approach would have little or no risk on the striking nation’s public opinion and is unlikely to increase the tension among religiously diverse groupings while at the same time preserving civil liberties. Lastly, there is a need for interfaith organizations to collaborate in an effort to promote religious tolerance and this would result in a culture that promotes peace. The ensuing culture will minimize the chances of terrorism from occurring since the latter hugely depends on an existing framework of violence.
Conclusion
Conclusively, therefore, it is fair to argue that the 9/11 attacks impacted negatively on individual’s perceptions on religious tolerance. Policymakers often find it difficult to initiate counter terrorism approaches while preserving civil and religious liberty. The solution to addressing this problem requires that approaches to be adopted should focus on promoting tolerance within the citizens and social healing as these have been negatively affected by the events of the 9/11 attacks.
