McDonald’s a successful franchise

Introduction

The franchises originated since the 17th century, with the original definition being the transfer of product from one place to another. This type of franchise was practiced during the Middle Ages with the transfer of harvesting and agriculture products such as cotton, vegetation and species. But in 1959 the word franchise changed meaning to the business model we know today. The first known modern franchise feature were the German breweries that offered its product to taverns exclusively. 

Developing

In the 50s in the United States the franchise of many restaurants began of what we now know as fast food. The first successful restaurants to create the triumphant system in delivering a complete menu in less than 3 minutes were McDonald’s’s in 1955. But what does it have to do with Guatemala? Restaurant chains are the largest industry in the franchise market and the most successful. This is also checked in Guatemala where the most victorious business is restaurants. 

Within a range of three years from 2013 to 2016 the growth of restaurants in Guatemala was between 7% and 10% with an average of 60 inaugurations of restaurants per day. But every great business has its beginning, and in Guatemala that beginning happened in the 1970s. One of the most recognized restaurants in Guatemala is Pollo Campero with its origin being in the capital. It was founded in 1971 by the Guatemalan businessman Mr. Dionisio Gutiérrez.

The first restaurant opened in the capital and after its great success, in 1972, a year after its inauguration the international expansion towards El Salvador began and the creation of a multimillionaire chain of restaurants. Pollo Campero was a revolutionary business model, since in Guatemala only independent restaurants were known. The process of converting a business into chains is a vital step to be able to franchise, and was verified by the success of Chicken Campero in its early years.

They are responsible for introducing a new business style to Guatemala and were the most revolutionary. Then in 1975, McDonald’s arrived in the capital and was built in zone 1. When McDonald’s arrived in Guatemala, it was already a franchiseed and globalized American chain, but the restaurant introduced something unknown to the Guatemalans and it is the franchise. McDonald’s was very well recognized in Guatemala in the business of the franchisees, for example the celebration of children’s birthday in 1977 begins in 1977.

The invention of the happy box in 1978 thanks to Guatemala. After the expansion of Chicken Campero and the arrival of McDonald’s in 1978 the Macarone was created, another Guatemalan triumphant chain. But what determines a franchise? A franchise is the sale of a business model to entrepreneurs, in other words it is a legal and commercial relationship between the owner of a service brand and a group that wishes to use that identification in a business.
