Obama’s Two-Year Education Program – A Blessing or a Menace?
The two-year college proposal plan set forth by President Obama has created a debating environment for and against the education proposal. Education is considered to be the birthright of every citizen and should have to be facilitated to the low-and medium-income group as well. The economic disparity leading towards educational disparity is one of the most severe aspects the United States is facing at the very moment.
Kahlenberg has provided a logical explanation of the fact that two-year college degree would help to minimize the educational and subsequently educational disparity. However, different commentators including Ross in Where Obama’s Community-College Plan Falls Short has also questioned the very feasibility and addressing the root causes behind crippling higher education system. Nonetheless, Kahlenberg in The Genius of Obama’s Two-Year College Proposal has provided strong logos and pathos sets of arguments in his article.
Community colleges are considered the home of more than 24 million American students that prefer because of its relative feasible as compared to the four-year bachelor’s program. Kahlenberg (1) has also presented evidence regarding the argument stating that the tuition fees of community college is around $3,260; however, on the other hand, the tuition at public four-years degree program is as much as $8,890. In order to counteract the argument, Ross (2) has presented that the Pell Grants can cover up to $5,730 in expenses for tuition fees.

Nevertheless, the argument can be challenged based on the very statement that the Pell Grant could not reduce “significant graduation disparity” (3). As pointed out by Kahlenberg that it would “cost the federal government $60 billion over 10 years” (1) provides additional benefits of Pell Grant in favor of two-year bachelor program.
Another compelling argument is regarding the universality of Obama’s proposal as highlighted by Kahlenberg. The very same model has been implemented in Tennessee where more than 90% of the senior students have applied for the two-year community college bachelor’s program. The very encouragement as outlined by Kahlenberg has stemmed out of its nature of being “free” from tuition fees and secondly because of the inability of affording high-interest rates for the four-year bachelor’s degree (1). Surely, the Pell Grant can support the four-year bachelor’s students belonging to middle and lower-middle class students as proposed by Ross. However, it has been proved that the financial aid forms have a proven track record of being “notoriously difficult” (Kahlenberg 1).
As part of arguments drawn from Ross based on the quality of education and enrollment of community college students towards four-year program possess a more demanding outlook. The efficacy of different courses offered in community colleges are being questioned based on the “mastery of high school concepts” (Ross 2). However, Kahlenberg has presented a much more undeniable argument based on facts of 2011 Delta Project Report stating that level of research and amount of funds dedicated to research in community colleges are quite meager as compared to public research institutes. Based on the students facing economic hardships creates a strong impact on students’ performance in terms of grades and CGPA.
All in all, the arguments presented by Kahlenberg have been backed with strong logical explanation outweighing the ethos arguments forwarded by Ross. The development of an affordable bachelor’s degree can not only reduce economic segregation but also help to enhance the quality of education thereby leading towards more students completing their bachelor’s degree and finding a middle-to-high income jobs.
