When you list a number of items and ideas you may wish to include in a paper, what is this technique called?
This technique is referred to as jotting (Hacker and Sommers 20).
What does clustering do that listing does not?
Unlike listing, clustering makes an essay to be focused and logical (Hacker and Sommers 19).
3. Briefly explain the process of freewriting.
Freewriting is a process of writing quickly and freely whatever a writer thinks. The aim of freewriting is for the writer to determine what is in their mind, as well as any questions (Hacker and Sommers 13).
4. What will writing a working thesis statement do for you?  Why should you not worry too much about having its wording be exact?
A working thesis statement offers a writer a place to begin their writing. The writer should not worry about its wording because the thesis statement provides a first draft (Hacker and Sommers 15).
5. When is an informal outline useful?  When might you want to write a more formal outline?
An informal outline is useful when a writer needs to see how they will support their thesis and come up with a tentative structure for their ideas (Hacker and Sommers 19). Alternatively, a formal outline is essential when a writer needs to determine if the parts of their essay will work together, as well as whether the paper has a logical structure (Hacker and Sommers 20).
6. What is the most common strategy when writing an introduction paragraph?
The most common technique is beginning with engaging sentences or a hook, which appeal to the reader, define the purpose of the essay and communicate the thesis or main idea (Hacker and Sommers 22).

7. What does a thesis require?  What can a thesis NOT be?
A thesis needs to have a position that can be explained and supported, answer a question, solve a problem or present a viewpoint on a debate, be sharply focused and of an appropriate length (Hacker and Sommers 14). On the other hand, a thesis cannot be a fact, description or question, nor can it be too broad, narrow or vague (Hacker and Sommers 18).
8. What things can/should a conclusion paragraph do/be?
A conclusion should restate the essay’s primary idea but not repeat it. The conclusion drives the idea home and can enable the reader to reflect upon the content of the paper (Hacker and Sommers 25).
9. What qualities should a font you use for an MLA paper have?
An MLA paper requires an easy-to-read and standard font like Times New Roman (Hacker and Sommers 513).
10. What page does MLA not require?
MLA does not need a title page (Hacker and Sommers 513).
11. Where does your name and so on go in an MLA paper?
The writer’s name and other details are on the first page of an MLA paper (Hacker and Sommers 513).
12. What size should all margins be in MLA?  How much spacing do your lines get?
The margins should be one inch everywhere on the page, whereas the spacing should be double space in every section of the paper as well (Hacker and Sommers 514).
13. When do you use italics when writing a title?  When do you put titles into quote marks?
Italics are used when writing book titles, while quote marks are used for articles, short stories and poems, among other short works (Hacker and Sommers 514).
14. What special things do you do to a long quotation inside of an MLA essay?
The long quotation should be indented one inch from the left margin to separate it from the rest of the text. It should also be double-spaced (Hacker and Sommers 514).
15. How do you arrange the items that go into your works cited list?
This list should be organized alphabetically by the authors/editors’ last names or titles if a work does not have any author or editor (Hacker and Sommers 514).
16. What is your favorite color?  (Just seeing if you’re really paying attention!)
My favorite color is blue. It is not too dull or bright.
