Most Memorable Thanksgiving Dinner
Despite the fact it was a few years ago, I still reminisce my first thanksgiving dinner. The year was 2010 and I was barely eight years old. I had never attended a thanksgiving dinner before. The closest I had to attend that kind of occasion was through watching movies and listening to stories from my friends. Earlier in November of that year, my mother promised to take us to our grandparents’ home in the countryside for thanksgiving. I was very thrilled as I ardently waited for that day to arrive. Days flew by and the day finally arrived. We woke up early in the morning and started getting ready for a long journey to the countryside. It was a chilly day, but that could not cool down the excitement I had. We began our journey at around 10 o’clock in the morning. It was quite a long drive and at around quarter past eight in the evening, we arrived at my grandparent’s home.
My grandparents cordially welcomed us into their house. Once we entered the old wooden house, a medley of sweet aromas filled the air and I began salivating in readiness for the meal. The mood was lively and everyone was smiling as we headed to the dinner table and I could feel the spirit of thanksgiving already. The dinner table was stylishly decorated and we really felt welcomed. The turkey was positioned on the center of the table and it was surrounded by platters of food. Generally, during family dinners I had gotten used to the system of courses where appetizers started followed by the main course then the dessert.

This time round it was a bit different as all the delicacies were placed on the table. Everyone took their seats and we said words of grace. We then started serving the food to our plates. All kinds of foodstuffs were present ranging from stuffed turkey, corn pudding, vegetable rice and broccoli among many more. Without more ado, I stretched my hand for the roasted turkey and went on to take an enormous chunk for my plate. Together with gravy and some cream sauce, the turkey seemed mouth-watering. It was a huge lump of dark meat which had been perfectly roasted. The turkey’s skin was coated with some kind of spice which was alien to me. I then served other delicacies to my side dish. Once I had my first nibble, I could not hide the scrumptiousness of the meat. We all ate quietly for about five minutes before my grandfather started a conversation by asking us about our journey. The blissful hum and the continual bustle of conversation combined and created a warm feeling at the dinner table. The feeling of coziness made by the people bustling around in the dining room was heightened by the warmth emanating from the fireplace in the living room. As we continued eating, my grandfather started telling funny stories about his days in the U.S, Navy. Everyone kept laughing about his hilarious jokes and the mood was infectious.
Feeling the urge to refill my empty dish, I stretched my hand for the Cranberry sauce. Cranberry sauce is something I was used to, but I had by no means savored it with berries grown at home by my grandparents. It tasted truly superb and I couldn’t have imagined that would come from the normal cranberries. Growing up in an urban setting, I had gotten used to canned cranberries which tasted awful at times. Once I had eaten a number of spoonfuls of the sauce I began feeling a bit full. As I was a young child I had no alternative but to leave some room for the dessert. Once everyone had finished eating, the pumpkin pie was removed from the oven and all of us could fill a new sensational smell wafting through the dining room. My grandmother cut the homemade pie into slices and everyone got a piece. One could easily perceive that the pie had been made for hours from simply the best homegrown pumpkins. After the eating pie, the dinner was over and everyone was full.
After the dinner, we remained seated in the dining table as we continued with refreshing conversations. We shared tales about our diverse lives and at this moment I understood how great it is to have a caring and loving family. I realized that Thanksgiving is not only about the delicacies but also a moment of having a good time with your whole family.
The majority of the people who know of Thanksgiving very well will always tell you that food is not the key aim of the day. It is truly a marvelous privilege to spend the day with the rest of your family. During Thanksgiving, relatives all over America travel to be united with their dear ones. It was not purely the delicacies that made my first Thanksgiving an incredibly personal experience but the family companionship. The complete joy of enjoying yourselves with your dear is surely a moment to cherish. Enjoying an appetizing meal as you spend precious time with your family is an experience of a lifetime.
