WHY FRESH GRADUATES SHOULD LOOK FOR JOBS, CONTRARY TO STARTING THEIR BUSINESSES.
There has been a growing debate about whether college or university graduates should go in search of employment or start their businesses. The increased rate of unemployment in the country is the actual reason for this debate. I am a proponent of the idea that fresh graduates should be in search of employment. It is quite an uncommon position, but I will justify my stand.
For fresh graduates, there are some business skills that one can only learn through employment. The school environment may not yield some of these skills. Such skills include among others client relationships, human resource management, communication, teamwork, organization, problem-solving and generally how the industry, the market, and the business world operate (Fonseca et al., 2001.).
Studies have shown that one of the primary reasons why small startups fail is due to poor management decisions and lack of adequate experience. Graduates are attached to a senior person who guides them through the business immediately they are employed. The exposure at the workplace, including the challenges they face or see their bosses go through, significantly helps in shaping them to recognize and understand the business world better.
As Shane (2009) points out, arguments in favor of businesses claim these are qualities that people can learn later, but this is not the case in most instances. For such ventures as consultancies, the clients often look for and pay for the good experience.

Equally, we cannot belittle the effect of the interactions made in the office place.
Through interaction with colleagues, an employee grows intellectually, recognizes opportunities together with the rest, develops various skills and even becomes competent at dealing with other people (Johnson et al., 2004.). It is not the case with those who go straight into business, and often have no such acumens. It is for these and many other reasons that I believe we should persuade people to first take up employment opportunities before considering whether or not to become entrepreneurs.
