Morals and Ethics of Police Officers
Name:
Institution:
Introduction
It is always argued that the law enforcement profession is one of the professions that requires a high degree of both morals and ethical standards. As a result, police officers are accorded one of the high expectations of executing their duties without any discrimination and with the highest possible level of ethical standards. According to the vision of the ethical policing, an ideal police system is one that upholds and value integrity by operating in an environment that is free from corruption, discrimination, or any form of misconduct. Therefore, police officers are expected to deliver their services without fear or favor. Everything that they do privately should be the same with those they do publicly (Mumford, 2014). In this paper, the ethical judgment and moral rules that transpired in the case study Rondo Neighborhood will be covered.
The best choice for the Antonne
Based on the vision of the ethical policing, the best choice that Antonne should make is the first one. Antonne should take the license with the intention of processing the ticket. After which, Antonne should then refer Peggy to his supervisor. It is worth noting that even though Antonne is a probationary officer, he has the necessary experience to successfully undertake. Therefore, it is of great importance that Antonne executes his duties with a high degree of ethics without any form of favor. Peggy though is a member of the City Council, has no right of violating traffic rules.

Her action of overspending in the residential area is a risk to the residents. As a result, it is important for the Antonne to play by the book by doing the right thing. Besides, Peggy herself is a renowned discriminator with a reputation of dislike to the police officers (Miller, 2013).
Therefore, making her pay for her crime can be a potential eye-opener that can spearhead her transformation towards a better individual. The fact that Peggy can turn the contract negotiation sour between the police labor union and the city should not be an excuse of the Peggy to do whatever she likes even if it entails breaking the law. Antonne should be motivated by the saying that two wrongs do not make a right. Therefore, he should stand for what is right simply because it promotes moral values and the ethical standards of the police departments. Being in possession of moral values as well as the exercising highest level of the ethical standards is more important that earning larger salaries (Morgan, 2013).
The ethical system I would apply
As a law enforcement, there are various ethical systems that I can apply as I execute my duties. These ethical systems include applied ethics, Meta ethics, and normative ethics. As a police officer, I would find normative ethics more appropriate. I find normative ethics as the most appropriate system because it does not only know what should be done but also act as a guide in the event of a situation deemed ethical dilemma. Besides, it provides a platform for understanding ethical behaviors, standards, and norms that are fundamental in the law enforcement career. Examples of the normative ethical system include virtue ethics, utilitarianism, egoism, ethics of care, deontology, moral relativism, social contract theory, and natural law (Miller, 2013).
Moral values applicable for the non-political figure offender
Regardless of the offender’s position in the society, the police officers should execute their duties with fairness and without any form of discrimination. Therefore, if the offender is a non-political figure, then I would execute my duty with utmost moral values. Observing moral values implies that I would follow the stipulated moral rules that underpin the operations of the police officers to the offender (Morgan, 2013). The first moral rule that I will undertake is to exercise integrity by failing to extend any undue favor that can compromise the case. Secondly, I would be honest in pointing to the offender her mistake as far as the traffic rules are concerned. Thirdly, I would be kind enough to highlight to the offender the consequences of not adhering to the traffic rules within the residential areas. It should be noted that the moral values are important because they assist the police to conduct their duties in an ethical manner as well as making ethical decisions (Mumford, 2014).
Ethical and moral behavior for a fellow police officer
The Law Enforcement Oath of office together with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics dictates that the police officers must conduct themselves soberly, honorably, and honestly. Also, police officers are expected to adhere to the stipulated rules regardless of whether they are for them or not (Raines, 2014). In simple terms, police officers are expected to be part of the solution rather than the problem. Consequently, if the traffic offender is my fellow officer, I would exercise my duties based on both the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and the Law Enforcement Oath of Office. Being a police officer, I can be attempted to be stricter simply because she is very aware of the traffic rules together with the penalty for violating those rules. Therefore, handling my fellow police officer would be much easier. In fact, I would not report her to the supervisor. Besides, I would simply present my case humbly without victimization or favor (Miller, 2013).
