Patient with Gastrointestinal Disorder
Many people suffer from mild or chronic gastrointestinal disorders which are currently common diseases. Gastrointestinal diseases affect organs and tracts such as the stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, esophagus, gallbladder, pancreas, and liver. Research statistics show that at least twenty million Americans suffer from chronic digestive related disorders and these diseases make up twenty-five percent of surgical operations (World, 2018). The patient, Mrs. K a thirty-year-old woman believes that the gastrointestinal disorder she suffers from was caused by exercising less, stress, low fiber diet and long-term use of antacid drugs which contains calcium. She always bought the antacid from pharmacies to cure the frequent heartburns or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). She later developed irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoid and ulceration of the rectum indicating the presence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Mrs. K continued to seek relief from over the counter drugs, but when things got worse, she decided to see a doctor.
After various diagnosis, the treatments began comprising prescription of drugs for IBS, IBD, and GERD. Some of the drugs include dexamethasone for antiemetic, omeprazole, cimetidine, serotonin and Immunodepressants and corticosteroids. She also underwent surgery to remove hemorrhoid. The follow-up care includes appointments for physical exams after the hemorrhoid surgery, blood tests and imaging tests. She confesses that she was uncomfortable at first concerning her hemorrhoid problem as she found it embarrassing especially when it was a male doctor attending to her but afterward she got used to it, and since then her gender has no any negative impact on her follow-up care. Both men and women have different levels of connections to health providers (nurses and doctors), access to health services and care utilization (Kaiser, 2015)
