Noam Chomsky is perhaps the most discussed political philosophers in recent times due to his focus on contemporary political trends that continue to impact us. In her book, ‘Requiem for the American dream’ the author attempts to identify 10 major factors that dictate the accumulation of wealth and power in the rapidly shifting political environment. Chomsky defines these factors as being key in determining the future direction of the world’s leadership (Chomsky 45). 6 of these principles act as the pillars of this philosophy.
Run the regulators
In this context, power brokers and those that seek power in its absolute sense often seek to capture the regulators for key sectors. When this happens, they usually reserve the power to bend the rules in their favor. Most of the political elite concentrate their wealth by manipulating regulators to waive certain regulations to be in their favor. For instance, most of the tax cuts instilled by revenue authorities usually seek to reduce the tax that is paid by the wealthy in current economies as opposed to favoring the poor.
Engineer elections.
Chomsky acknowledges the central role that elections play in determining both the political and economic direction that a country will take. New leaders will likely adopt new reforms based on their ideology. Most players usually seek to have such reforms in their favor for their economic and political prosperity. Based on this, powerful people usually go out of their way to influence elections that likely affect their political and economic standings.

Such interest person will disguise themselves into lobby groups that seek certain changes in the principles of governance.
Keep the rabble in line
In the context of Chomsky’s book, the word ‘rabble’ generally refers to the general population. In his view, while the ‘rabble’ is often geared towards achieving a perfect political and economic democracy, the elite and powerful multinationals are usually opposed to it. Most of them benefit from the exploitation of the masses. They, therefore, have to always find a way to manipulate and keep the masses in line in order to carry on with their plunder
Manufacture consent
The elite usually draws most of their power from simple acts of a distraction of the masses from concentrating on real issues that affect them. Most of the prime information in the mass media often focus on new fashion and social trends. This is usually perfectly designed to keep the elite in control. Endless advertising campaigns focus on superficial issues that have little or no control over economic or political transformation. This shows evidence that the elite controls our consumption and eventually our mindsets.
Marginalize the population
Chomsky notes that the divide and rule tactic has always been the main tools for the control of the people. Most of the efforts of those in power go into making people poor and undermining their unity. This way, it becomes difficult to stage a united front in fighting against most injustices in the society. The population is mostly taught to be capitalistic in their social approach to issues.
