Many people acquire diseases in the process of receiving treatment, clinical care, and other health care related practices. The number of the people suffering from healthcare acquired infections has raised over the last few decades hence the inclusion of “reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections” goal in the current national patient safety goals (Sickbert 61). The goal affects all healthcare institutions because healthcare acquired infections happen in all health related facilities. The subsets of the goal focus on patient and staff education to limit the number of infections reported yearly across the globe.
The center for disease control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (W.H.O) have come up with certain principles that enable healthcare providers to reduce the number of infected people and maintain their code of ethics during service delivery. Hand washing is one of the most effective strategies that have seen the reduction of the number of people suffering from health care acquired infections (Sickbert 62). Healthcare practitioners are urged to wash their hands frequently, especially while handling patients. The CDC and W.H.O provide health care institutions with guidelines that allow the measurement of staff compliance levels as well as the number of infections experienced at the institution.
Although health care acquired infections happen in all health care facilities, the rate of infection varies from one institution to another for various reasons.
