Right To Confidentiality for Suicidal Clients

Societies have well-stipulated codes of conduct that every member of the community has to adhere to, failure to what is termed as the breaching of the codes of ethics. Confidentiality is one of the codes of ethics where individuals to some extent have a right to privacy. A person’s information has to remain undisclosed to the illegal people; at the same time, they should never undergo manipulation to change their ideologies. Particularly, the psychiatrists, who serve as counselors, have a restricted functionality when it comes to dealing with their clients. As a way of upholding confidentiality as a code of ethics, they have to do no harm to their client which could be either removing of the present harm or preventing the future damage. Therefore, this raises a dilemmatic situation about right to confidentiality for suicidal clients; however, it improves my value for life over ethical conducts rights as I resolve to inform the family concerned and the authorities about the possible danger to the client.
Despite there being a right to confidentiality, there is a concern for confidentiality when it comes to suicidal clients. As individuals seek guidance from psychiatrists, it means that they are likely facing a trouble that if not resolved could land their lives in danger. It is even worrying when the client thinks of committing suicide, but the counselor is limited not to alter their desire as a matter of sustaining confidentiality. In the end, the client’s privacy is sustained, but their life risk is left unresolved.

Consequently, I find my value for life over ethical conduct improved once a resolution is developed for this dilemma. Life has its significant value for every individual, and I know the principle reason for people seeking doctor’s or psychiatrist’s help is due to their value for life. Every person would like the fact they are living, and their death is natural rather than emotionally induced leading to suicide. Therefore, developing a solution to this will guarantee the value of life over the restrictive confidentiality results, hence reducing the incidences of life loss in cases such as suicides due to emotional stress.
Nonetheless, I would recommend besides confidentiality at least there should be involvement of a family member. The victims of prospective suicide cases require help beyond their confidentiality which would be resolved by involving a family member to monitor the counseling process and outcome, or in the event of such incidences; there should be information on the household concerned. Once the family members have the information, they can serve a significant purpose in monitoring and help the victim to go over their emotional stress at the end changing their decision. In so doing, the confidentiality right is compromised, but it is shared to those held close to the client. Therefore, life will be saved at the expense of a compromised confidentiality right.
Furthermore, the involvement of the legal authorities would improve the privacy right as well as minimize the likelihood life loss through suicides. The dilemmatic incidence of the right to privacy arises because there are both positive and negative outcomes for the right. However, if the right should be modified to include involvement of the legal authorities where psychiatrists report any possibilities of impending client’s life loss, the negatives would be resolved. The administration will have a responsibility of ensuring that they develop necessary measures under which the clients are exposed to preventive measures limiting the suicidal deaths. Hence, besides upholding the confidentiality rights of the victims, the vulnerable victims are prevented from committing suicide.
In summary, it is ideal for every society to be established on some ethics of conduct. However, these values at times compromise some essential incidences. For instance, the right of confidentiality for suicidal clients raises ethical concerns in matters of its positivity and negativity in the outcome. Therefore, if the privacy rights were modified to incorporate family and legal authority would mitigate the situation where there are prospected suicides.
