Abstract
A satirical piece involves the use of humour, irony, grotesque and parody among other satirical devices. Satire can be found in various places, poems, shows, novels, and literary works. An author may use satire to ridicule a country, an individual or organization by using irony or sarcasm. Satire can also be used in a piece of work to bring attention to vices and problems in a society that needs improvement. Irony refers to using words to show the opposite of what was meant. Sarcasm, on the other hand, refers to a bitter joke. In some cases, the joke might be funny and humorous, while at other times, the joke can be serious and painful. The piece below is about how I spend my day yesterday with my friend James. The story begins by explaining how my friend and I decided to visit the beach, where we had an unforgettable experience. The piece has employed the use of satiric devices such as humour, irony and mock encomium.

How I Spent My Day Yesterday
My best friend, James, is my favorite person on the planet. Yesterday, I was feeling bored and decided to visit him. Whenever I visit him, I always bring along my dog Jess to keep watch over my back. Yesterday was different since Jess was away running some errands, I suppose he was at his friend’s house too (1). I arrived at my friend’s house, and he welcomed me to the house. We played some video games and watched an episode of Fifty shades of chicken (8). I got bored of staying indoors and suggested an outdoor activity.

We finally decided to go to the lakeside and swim. ‘Did you take a bath today?’ he asks. ‘No. Is one missing? I ask (1). ‘Are you trying to be funny?’ He asks. Laughter is medicine though (Highet, 45). He pats my shoulder, and off we go. We are having a great time at the beach; watching people playing baseball by the lakeside. As we are chatting on our weekend plans, Mickey, our schoolmate passes by with a group of his friends. Mickey is a great football player at school and has led the school to win several matches. My friend is also in the school team and is not a great friend of Mickey and has always ridiculed his football skills. When offered the chance to play football with his friends, I gladly take the offer. James, however, insistsed that he would teach him a lesson and gathers a few of our friends by the lake and forms a team. ‘The weather is beautiful, and even if we lose, we will celebrate the beautiful defeat,’ he chuckles (2).
The match was exciting, by halftime, our team was behind by three scores. I wanted to quit and leave, but James insists that we had to teach Mickey a lesson. ‘Let’s teach the son of a bitch a lesson,’ he said (3). I love my friend and would do anything for him, including losing my tooth. As the game ended, we knew we had lost. James, however, does not look defeated, he is smiling walking towards Mickey and said, ‘I did not lose the game, I just ran out of time’ (4). I saw Mickey grin and raise his hand to slap James, I quickly picked my clothes and ran for my life. James is a small bodied person, and Mickey has well-built muscles. James was watching them fight like watching an ant fight an elephant (6). His eyeballs are burning charcoal (5) that gave me a harmful stare and his hands have huge scars from fighting. I was not ready to die yet. I know I said I would risk anything for my friend, but I was not ready to lose my face. ‘I never forget faces, but I will surely forget your huge tiny face (7), I heard Mickey shout.
