There’s no doubt that companies may reap numerous benefits from cloud-based solutions. However, with the several benefits, some disadvantages come as wells. Therefore, it is vital to understand the shortcomings and benefits of cloud-based solutions to get the most of the business technology.
Advantages
Prevention of data loss: offline data backups that are updated regularly minimize the risk of data loss (Dennis, 2018). The prospect of seeing critical information disappear without trace can be frightening.
Denial of Service (DoS) prevention: cloud-based solutions will detect such attacks and provide appropriate responses to guarantee 24/7 availability.
Reduction of malicious threats: cloud-based solutions provide solutions to prevent former employees, business partners or contractors from gaining access to the cloud network.
Cost Saving: a company may save substantial costs with cloud computing considering the zero in-house server requirements for storage and applications.
More reliable: with managed service platforms, cloud-based solutions are much more consistent and reliable than the in-house IT infrastructure because it guarantees 24/7 availability.
Considering the advantage of data loss prevention, cloud-based solutions could have prevented the salesperson from losing all the data in his laptop during the fire in his house. It would have enabled faster and accurate retrieval of the company’s data.
Disadvantages
Downtime: cloud service providers normally take care of many clients every day hence they may get overwhelmed and suffer technical outages.

Wait! Securing the Data paper is just an example!

Malicious insiders: as much as cloud providers may screen staff, problems may still occur sometimes. Malicious insiders may compromise the organization’s data.
Multitenant Concerns: cloud-based services are normally shared between many customers hence issues like application errors for one client may expose confidential information of other clients (Ward, 2018).
Security concerns: as much the cloud services providers often try to implement the best security solutions, storing data and private files on an external service provider normally opens up risks.
Limited Control: the cloud infrastructure is owned entirely and managed by the service provider which normally transfers minimal control to the customer. The customer only has control over applications and data and not the backend infrastructure.
The aspect of malicious insiders is one aspect that would not have prevented the issue in the above scenario. They may gain access and compromise the company data. However, this may not lead to the total loss of data.
There is the possibility that telecommuters may not always be connected to the Internet. It would be a challenge considering the above scenario. Lack of internet connectivity would hinder having proper data backups and real-time communication. However, offline data backups can be updated regularly minimize the risk of data loss.
