Wisdom and Professional Nursing Judgment
It is apparent that the concept of professional nursing judgment is derived from the knowledge which is gained by nurses during the undertaking of their educational studies as well as through observation in the workplace (Benner, Tanner, & Chesla, 2009). It is evident that nurses utilize the concept of professional judgment to make rational decisions such as identifying the data to collect, the available and accessible methods of deciphering information, and the means of interventions. Primarily, nursing informatics is a requirement which should be involved in the making of professional nursing judgment. As a triage nurse, the acquisition of additional knowledge during practice to add on what was acquired during educational studies results in the creation of wisdom as an extraordinarily developed sense. Wisdom is a concept which is built on a professional nursing judgment. The main components of wisdom in nursing informatics includes a nurse’s instinct, education, list of available informatics, experience in practice, and professional nursing judgment (Benner, Tanner, & Chesla, 2009). As such, the concept of wisdom and that of professional nursing judgment are essential in determining the outcomes of patients.
DIKW is a core conceptual framework which is employed by nurses to practice nursing informatics. , 2011). As a triage nurse, DIKW is used to comprehend how data to information to knowledge and stretching all the way to wisdom interrelate. As such, it is helpful in my practice because it makes a triage nurse to realize that intelligence is another factor which is equally critical in the assessment of a patient just as wisdom and knowledge. Ideally, DIKW is employed from the collection and processing of data into information in order to generate patients’ medical history while also taking into account their chief complaints. Afterward, knowledge is applied after internalization of information to determine an appropriate intervention to adopt before establishing communication with doctors in the emergency department.
