Basic Duties and Responsibilities of a Successful Office Employee
Individuals who manage the operation in an office are referred differently depending on the organization and the functions they do. According to Schindly, they can be given the title of a secretary, office assistant, administrative assistant, or even executive assistant (1). Their responsibilities also vary depending on the operations of the office and their capabilities. With increased automation in modern offices, most office employees today perform the managerial tasks as opposed to clerical duties.
The core function of an office employee is to organize the physical and operational aspects of an office. The administrative assistant is often in-charge of arranging the office in terms of filing documents and helping the senior employees to manage their affairs. Therefore, besides typing documents, recording meeting minutes, and scheduling appointments, the administrative assistant, also handles some clients that do not require specialized services. Schindly notes that in some fields, an office assistant needs to have training on specialized knowledge such as legal or medical (1). However, in most cases, a person with a high school diploma can comfortably undertake the duties of a general office.
In conclusion, the duties of an office employee are diverse but all focus on the smooth operations of office space. In most cases, the senior employee allocates specific functions to the administrative assistant depending on the tasks at hand.

Nonetheless, the execution of the functions requires an individual who is well organized, has good interpersonal skills, and is skilled in operating all the office equipment. With time, an experienced office employee can shift to a managerial decision since they often learn critical managerial skills such as decision –making and people management while on the job.
