Effects of Video Games oh Pro-social Behavior
In an article, “Failure to Demonstrate That Playing Violent Video Games Diminishes Pro-social Behavior” by Tear and Mark, the impact of video games on pro-social behavior is investigated to understand their effects on public policy. It this experimental study, bout 120 players who are also students played three kinds of games. The four games used in the study were Grand Theft Auto (IV), Black Ops (Call of Duty sequel), World of Zoo, and Portal all representing antisocial, violent, pro-social, and non-violent categories respectively (Tear and Mark 2). The study found that all these kinds of games impact human behavior towards aggressiveness and violence even to strangers (Tear and Mark 6) who portray unfriendly but harmless behavior.
The article’s findings support the class modules on social influence on early childhood behavior. As learned in the class, exposure to the environment has significant impacts on society through the mechanisms detailed in social theory. Specifically, it alters one’s attitude and behaviors that are in line with the conditions they support (Anderson and Brad 6). Therefore, gamers learn new behaviors, values, and beliefs that can influence their day-to-day lives. Somehow, the findings explain the way an oppressive alcoholic father who may steer the interests and behaviors of children towards delinquency.
Also, the study is in line with the class discussion on effects of media and other technologies on human behavior.
